Oh Happy Days #10

Finding the happy bits this week has been tough, I'm not going to lie. It's just been one of those weeks. But there is, of course, some things worth mentioning :)

♥ FAMILY & TACOS. After swimming last Sunday we went out to my mom's and enjoyed delicious tacos, cake and doughnuts. It's always nice spending a few hours laughing and talking with family when you don't really get to see them very often.

♥ TEN YEARS. Craig and I celebrated our ten year anniversary this week! (read post here) I feel overwhelmed with love from this guy and I couldn't be happier <3

♥ HOMESENSE FINDS. We didn't get each other anything for our anniversary so we ended up in Homesense and found a beautiful new quilt set for our bedroom and a lampshade to better match our living room. We're not going to bother putting them out right now because we plan on moving this summer so we thought it was best to keep them wrapped up until then so we have some fresh new stuff for the move.

Ahh, a blog after my own heart <3
"Ice Cream" Whispers Clara is the blog my romantic dreams are made of. Have you ever seen a blog that just looks beautiful? That makes you feel happy every time you visit? Well if not, this is the one you need to check out. Her photography is always so amazing and bright and her posts are totally relatable. A few of my fave posts:
Do please check these out :)

Well that's it for another week! Sorry I didn't have very many happy points to share but you know, that's the way life goes! Tell me something that's made you happy this week!

5 Reasons I Hate Our New Apartment

Just a little warning...this post is going to be chock full of negativity.

Because that's how I feel today.

We moved into our current apartment in July of 2016 with high hopes of loving our new space. I mean, it was such a step up from our last place AND rent was $100 cheaper! What's not to love!? We've only been here for about six months.
Six months of regret.

Here are 5 reasons I hate our new apartment.

IT'S ON A HIGHWAY. With no sidewalks to be seen. I also don't have my driver's license (which is my own stupid fault, I know) BUT I didn't realize I wouldn't be able to take Lux anywhere during the day. I can't very well walk along a busy highway with an 8 month old in tow. So this means for the past six months me and Lux are cooped up in the apartment all day until Craig gets home from work. Which after work, he's obviously tired and not going to want to run around town. I'm going stir crazy.

OUR ELECTRICITY BILL HAS QUADRUPLED. No, that's not a mistake. Our electricity bill is FOUR TIMES higher than we've ever had to pay for power. The two other places we've rented before had heat and hot water included. This one does not. It has electric heat and a hot water tank. We thought by paying 100 less for rent that it would make up for the extra power we'd be using and it would be okay. Boy were we wrong. Since winter started we've literally only had heat turned on in Lux's room and the living room, we take ten minute showers and we don't even have a lot of stuff plugged in. There's absolutely no reason it should be so high! It doesn't help that the apartment is very poorly insulated and there's drafts all around windows and doors so our money is literally going right out the window.

HOT WATER RUNS OUT AFTER ONE SHOWER. You'd think since we pay so much to heat the damn water we'd both be able get nice hot showers but no. If I get a shower first, and like I said I only take ten minute showers, and Craig gets in after me, his shower is cold. It's ridiculous.

WE'RE SPENDING AT LEAST $70 A MONTH JUST TO WASH OUR CLOTHES. There's no washer and dryer in our apartment. You have to go down to the cold basement and use the shared laundry room. Each load (a wash and dry) costs $3.00. Anyone who has a baby knows how much laundry you have to do. So we have to buy rolls of money to use the machine and we typically have to buy new rolls every 2 weeks adding up to $70 for the month. That's not even including detergents and dryer sheets which I have to use THREE dryer sheets every load because the machines are so old they leave a musty, old smell on the clothes if I don't.

WE'RE NOT ALLOWED TO PAINT OR HANG THINGS ON THE WALLS. May not be a big deal to some of you but when you're already hating the place you live and you're not allowed to hang pictures or anything to make it feel more homey and cozy..it just sucks. I'm not used to it because I've never not been allowed to decorate where I've lived before.

There are SOO many more things I could write about like the fact that our stove fuse blew like ten times in the middle of making dinner, the tub stopper leaks so I have to refill the tub like 3 times just to give Lux a bath and the water has so much iron in it it's basically unusable for anything but showers.

I know this was a lot of ranting in one post but I just can't take it anymore. My anxiety has been at an all-time high since living here and I just can't do it. Come July we are definitely NOT renewing our lease and we are out of here. We're not allowed to break the lease right now so that's why we're still living in this hell hole.

TELL ME ABOUT THE WORST PLACE YOU'VE EVER LIVED....PLEASE? LOL

What My 7 Month Old Eats in a Month + Bulk Food Haul

I wanted to write this post for a few reasons;

1) If you're anything like me you constantly google what you should be feeding your baby at certain ages, how much they should be eating and so on.

2) When you find online forums about this topic the negativity can be quite overwhelming with one person bashing the puree method and another person bashing the BLW method. It can all be too much.

3) I wanted to show that you can find fantastic food for your baby to last an entire month without breaking the bank.

First, I want to point out that every baby is different and every parent is different. What works for one family may not work for another and that's okay. I'm astounded by how many "internet experts" there are and how rude they can be when voicing their opinions about what and how a baby should be fed.

I want you to know that there is no "wrong method". If you feel better giving your baby purees, do it! If you want to test out baby led weaning, go for it! Children should not be considered "less capable" just because a parent doesn't like the BLW method.

With that being said, I prefer feeding my child baby cereal and pureed food. I'm a constant worrier and always fear that my baby may choke if I tried BLW. And that's okay. That doesn't mean she's any less advanced then the next child. She might be a pro at eating food on her own. I don't know, because I've never tried.

As I'm sure every one has already heard at some point "food before one is just for fun". Your baby doesn't need "real food" for all of their nutrients. They should still be getting a healthy amount of formula or breast milk as their main source of nutrients. So let's dive into what I purchased for my seven month old for a month's worth of food and how I go about feeding her.

WHAT WE BOUGHT:
Five cases of Parent's Choice Sensitive to Lactose formula - $16.97 each
Three boxes of Gerber baby cereal - $3.47 each
Five 213 ml jars of Heinz pureed baby food - $1.00 each
Twenty five packs of Parent's Choice purees - $1.00 each

TOTAL COST: $125.26

FORMULA
Lux has been on this formula since she was about 2 weeks old. We tried breastfeeding but she couldn't latch on properly and wasn't getting enough so we had to try formula. We tried two different kinds before this stuff which made her puke constantly so we decided to try the sensitive to lactose kind and its been working like a charm ever since. A case normally lasts us about 5-6 days so we picked up 5 cases for the month.

HEINZ 213ml JARS
This is our first time buying the big jars for her. We mostly bought them because they introduce meat into her diet. A few we picked up were vegetable, pork and apple and chicken vegetable paella. I'm excited to try them!

PARENT'S CHOICE PUREES
These things are amazing! We used to buy the heinz jars all the time but when I found these I was ecstatic. They're the same size serving as the jars but you have the option of squeezing them into a bowl to feed or letting your baby eat straight from the pack if you're on the go somewhere. And the selection is incredible. We bought 25 packs and only 3 were doubles. So there were 22 different flavours to choose from compared to heinz having like 6 different flavours. Not to mention the variety is SO good! Here's an example of some of the flavours you can buy; Pear, peach, kale and brown rice, apple, peach and quinoa, banana, apple, zucchini and amaranth and pear, blueberry and spinach. They're also all organic!

GERBER BABY CEREAL
Since Lux is almost eight months we stepped up to the eight month cereals which introduce yogurt into the diet. The three boxes we bought are wheat, yogurt and blueberry, wheat, yogurt and raspberry and wheat, yogurt, apple, pear and banana. She loves her cereal every day.

SO HOW DO I FEED HER?
(this is a general idea of time. Sometimes she's up earlier, sometimes a nap may interfere with times and sometimes she's just fussy and will want more or less of her food that day but normally she will eat something every 3 hours or so)

8:00am When she first wakes up she'll drink about 7 to 8 oz of formula. During growth spurts I've seen her drink 9 to 10 oz at one time.
11:00am Her next feeding is a 6 oz bottle and 5 tablespoons of cereal mixed with formula. The box says to mix with water but I prefer getting that extra formula in there.
2:00pm Another 6-7 oz bottle
5:00pm I'll give her one of her purees along with a bottle but she'll usually get full from her puree and she'll only drink 4-5 oz of formula.
8:00pm 7 oz bottle before bed

So that's what we buy for a month for our baby and a generalized feeding schedule. I hope this helps you if you're ever unsure about what to buy/what to feed your baby. Like I said, don't let anyone make you feel bad because you choose purees over BLW or vice versa. Purees fill your baby up just as much as BLW does. Trust me, I have a happy and healthy 20 pound 7 month old. The average 7 month old is 17 pounds so I think she's doing alright ;)

LET ME KNOW WHAT METHOD YOU PREFER FOR YOUR BABY!

A Decade Down, Forever To Go

Yesterday was a very special day....

A special day indeed.

Craig and I celebrated our ten year anniversary together.

I can't seem to process the fact that I've been with him for a decade already. It doesn't feel like its been that long but at the same time I feel like he's been in my life forever. All I know is that these past ten years have been more wonderful than I could have ever imagined.

I thought it might be nice to reminisce a little and think about all of the memorable things we've gone through over the years....

-the freezing winter walks we'd take every night just so we could hang out

-ice skating on the pond

-sharing milkshakes at the diner even though my stomach would kill afterwards

-our first camping trip together

-our mini adventures

-every birthday/holiday celebration

-our high school prom

-moving into our first apartment together...and then moving three more times after that!

-the horrible kayaking experience

-jumping from a plane with you

-disney world 2011

-our many hikes

-prince edward island trip 2015

-starting a family together

There are countless memories I could add here. I'm not sure how I got so lucky to find the love of my life at sixteen. But one thing I do know for sure is that I can't wait to spend the rest of my days with him- my love, my best friend.

Oh Happy Days #9

♥ SUNDAY SWIMMING. We've started swimming on Sundays! We're going to try to go every Sunday unless something comes up. Last Sunday was a special one because it was Lux's first time. She loved it!

♥ COZY COCOON MORNINGS. I don't know why but these last few days I just don't want to get out of bed. My blankets feel like a super cozy, warm cocoon wrapped around my body.

♥ NANNY CHATS. I call my grandparents every Wednesday just to chat and catch up with them. My poppy only talks for a few minutes but my nanny keeps me on the phone for over an hour most days. I love that its become our routine and they now look forward to me calling every Wednesday. Me and nan had a really good talk this week that left me feeling rather happy.

♥ THE OFFICE. Omg this show. I just started getting back into watching The Office and I'm so glad because I don't think I've ever watched a show that makes me laugh during every single episode.

♥ FAMILY TIME. We don't get to see my family much since we moved this Summer but on Thursday my mom drove down and picked me and Lux up for the day. We had a great time visiting with my sister and niece, we went shopping and mom bought Lux all new winter gear and then we went to my mom's new place and got to hang out with her and my brother. It was awesome.

♥ DRIVING PRACTICE. I've been getting behind the wheel quite a bit these days but its usually only to drive to the mailbox or a short distance. Saturday, however, I drove about 40 km to the hairdresser! I think I did pretty well. I'm trying to practice as much as I can before I take the road test.

Morgan's blog Morning Apple has been a favourite of mine these last few months. Every single post she writes feels like she's just having a conversation with you! Totally refreshing.
A couple of my fave posts from her:
Do make sure you check this blog out! :)

That wraps up another week of happy. Tell me something that made you happy this week!

My Ultimate Beauty Wishlist

I don't often splurge on myself. And that's okay...except that it means I usually end up with a pretty over-the-top wishlist. Some of these product are a little on the expensive side but a girl can dream right?

Even though the website says sold out this Glam Clam Mermaid Dreams brush set from Spectrum will one day be mine! I don't even think they ship to Canada but I WILL find a way! They are gorgeous. I can't stop looking at them. And the clam shell case is so adorable! Ahhhh I want.

Look at those beauties. The T3 twirl convertible interchangeable curling iron and the singlepass luxe straightener are calling my name!! I haven't used any T3 products before so I'm not sure if they're amazing or not but from the reviews on the website and some youtube videos I've watched, they seem like they are totally worth the money.

I don't wear much foundation but I've always wanted try out a really good one. The Makeup Forever Ultra HD Invisible Cover foundation seems like a go-to foundation for a lot of people. I definitely want to try it out. Along with the Nars creamy concealer. I feel like the only person on the planet who hasn't tried this concealer yet!

I think that's enough wanting for one post. It's already going to take me ages to save up for these five items! Let me know if you've tried any of these and what your thoughts were. Also, what's on your ultimate beauty wishlist?

Regained Happiness

Life has a funny way of creeping up on you doesn't it? Things change so fast and all of a sudden you find yourself not having the time to do the things that make you happy. Ever since me and Craig got together, going for drives was sort of our thing. Just hopping in the car and driving. Not knowing where we were going or where we'd end up.

At some point we just....stopped. And I guess we forgot how happy it made us.

This past weekend though, we hopped back in that car and just went.

The freezing air made my eyes water but the scenery was too gorgeous to pass up. We drove for hours, laughed and regained our misplaced happiness.

don't let what makes you happy fall by the wayside.

Oh Happy Days #8

You read that title right! I'm bringing the happy days back (again) but this time for good! In case you don't know Oh Happy Days is a series where I post every Sunday about the happy bits that happened the past week. Sort of like your typical Wonderful Wednesday posts you see going around but I just feel strange posting about my previous week in the middle of the week, you know? Reflecting on Sundays with a fresh new week ahead of me just makes me feel better. What makes Oh Happy Days a liiittle bit different is that I not only post what has made me happy during the week but I share a happy quote, happy photo and a shout out to a blog I love for the week as well!

Now that that's out of the way...ON WITH THE HAPPINESS!

THE MOTIVATION TO BLOG. I think my blogging mojo has come back! I've felt inspired and motivated to get back to blogging regularly and really put my all into this blog. Let's hope this feeling lasts throughout the rest of the year and doesn't fizzle out anytime soon!

♥ THE ROAD TO RECOVERY. I feel like I'm finally taking the steps I need to try to beat my anxiety/depression. And I feel pretty darn good about that right now. Finally admitting to myself and to Craig the extent of my depression has really put things into perspective for me. I'm finally talking out my worries, I'm trying my hardest not to let other people bring me down and I went to the library and got an anxiety self-help workbook that I'm really enjoying reading. I feel good.

♥ LUX'S FAKE LAUGH. She seems to have learned how to "make" herself laugh and its the funniest thing in the world. I wish I could share it with you.

♥ STRAWBERRY RHUBARB PIE. Omnomnom. That's all I have to say.

♥ LUX STOOD ON HER OWN. Proud mama moment happened on Friday. We practice standing every day with us holding on to Lux but on Friday she showed me that she can stand alone for about two minutes straight! I just know she'll be walking before she turns one 😊

♥ WEEKEND DRIVES. We hopped in the car and went on a super long drive on Saturday. We used to do this all the time but for some reason we stopped. I forgot how happy it made me doing that.

Beth's blog Toasty has been on my reading list ever since I started blogging! No matter what she chooses to write about whether its cruelty-free beauty, vegetarian posts or a delicious recipe I find myself drawn to her blog! She's a wonderful writer which makes reading her posts so enjoyable! DO make sure you check out her blog!

I'm so happy to be bringing this series back on the blog. You don't realize it but it does a world of good to sit and think about all the things that have made you feel good over the course of a week.

Since I'm going to be keeping this series going, I would LOVE if any of you wanted to link up on Sundays and do your own version of Oh Happy Days! You don't have to add in the quotes, photos or blog of the week. Just share whats been making you happy :) Let me know in the comments if you want to link up! #ohhappydays
Have the most wonderful day :)

Dresser/Change Table Makeover

I'm so happy to finally have Lux's dresser/change table finished. It was painted a while ago but I wanted to have the change pad and whatnot before I showed you the finished result. Finding this dresser/table combo was pure luck. I was on kijiji searching for any kind of dresser for Lux's room and this little gem popped up. The best part? It was free AND only about five minutes away from us!

Originally it was white with crayon marks and stickers all over it. I knew it needed some TLC but it was totally do-able!

Her nursery is grey, white, pink and sort of a minty colour. So I painted her dresser a dark grey, threw on a change pad and picked up a grey and white chevron printed change pad cover.

I'm completely happy with how it turned out! Her room is slowly but surely coming together. I can't wait until I can show you the completed room. All we have left is to build some bookshelves and throw up a bit of decor and it should be good!

If you like seeing furniture makeovers be sure to check out my other furniture posts!

A Day in My Life | A Typical Day For Me

january 11th
a rainy, gloomy, sick day

8 : 0 0 a m - Lux sleeps until 8 most mornings now 👌 so we got up to face the new day. Craig was home sick from work. I think we both got food poisoning off of some meat we had the night before because I was sick that night and he got it the next morning. Not good. So he fed Lux her bottle while we watched an episode of No Tomorrow on Netflix. Pretty good show. I recommend it!

8 : 4 5 a m - Breakfast for me. Peaches and Cream oatmeal, an orange and some almond milk.

9 : 0 0 a m - Had to give my smelly baby a bath. I love that she loves bathtime now. Makes it so much easier. After that we got her all ready for the day. I received a huge bag of hand-me-down clothes for her so I've been trying to wear something different on her everyday. It's become my mission to make use of everything she has.

9 : 4 5 a m - Out like a light for her first nap of the day. She always falls asleep pretty early in the morning which is kind of strange. You'd think where she just had like 10 hours of sleep she would stay up for a while longer but nope. She loves her morning naps. I took this time to relax and catch up on some blog reading.

1 0 : 4 5 a m - Lux woke up so we read two books together.

1 1 : 0 0 a m - Fed Lux some mixed grain with fruit cereal. She loves food! There isn't a whole lot she won't eat.

1 1 : 1 5 a m - Playtime for Lux while I cleaned the apartment. I think babies need a healthy balance of one on one playtime and alone playtime. They need to learn to play alone so they aren't afraid of doing things without you.

1 2 : 3 0 p m - I finished cleaning and Lux was down for another nap so I took this opportunity to finally get myself ready for the day.

1 : 0 0 p m - Lunchtime. A delicious turkey sandwich and a bowl of mixed veggies.

1 : 3 0 p m  T O  5 : 0 0 p m - We didn't really do much between these times. I curled my hair and played with/snuggled Lux. Watched a bit of Netflix. Not much to document.

5 : 1 5 p m - We got all bundled up and headed out. We went to check the mail and then to the grocery store.

6 : 0 0 p m - I fed Lux one of her most favourite purees- vegetable, beef and spaghetti...yum- while Craig made supper.

7 : 0 0 p m - Suppertime! We don't normally eat so late- usually around 530/6 but we were out so yeah. We had chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing and corn. So good! We always like to watch a show together while we eat and right now we're watching The Walking Dead. We've only just finished season 5 tonight. I'm super excited to catch up with the current episodes.

9 : 0 0 p m - After a bottle Lux went to bed for the night so for the rest of my night I just went on the computer, hung out with Craig and played a little Stardew Valley. (anyone out there who has played Harvest Moon as a kid, you MUST get this game!)

Let me know if you guys like these types of posts. I wouldn't do them all the time because this is what my life looks like most days and it would just get repetitive and boring. But I might do them if I know I have something going on that day!

THANKS FOR READING :)
