Here We Go Again..

*sigh*

So, I'll be taking another blog break. For who knows how long. At this point I feel like I can hardly call myself a "blogger". My blogging schedule is sporadic, I never have time to read and comment on other blogs and my views have seriously diminished over these past few months.

The posts I've managed to get up over the last four months are the result of using my brother's computer while he's at work (mine broke several months ago). So its been ok posting every now and then. But, we are now going to be moving to our own place this weekend so I'll be left without a computer once again. I plan to save up for another mac so honestly, I have no idea when that'll be.

I really want to continue blogging so I plan to come back full force once I get a new computer!

Fresh new content, a regular posting schedule, the works. The place we're moving is a rental..for now. We plan to buy it from the landlord very soon and let me tell you..it needs A LOT of work. We plan to do a complete renovation with this place and you can be sure I'll be blogging the entire process!

I'm a little upset that my blog has taken a serious backseat and that I'll be further damaging it by not posting for god knows how long after this but I'm also super excited thinking about what I'll be able to post and share with you all in the future! SO thank you to anyone who bothers sticking around with me and I hope I'll still see you guys in a few months when I get back!

Apple Picking At The Orchard

Picking my own apples at an apple orchard is something that's been on my to-do list for quite some time. There are a few orchards down in the valley and I really have no idea why its taken us this long to finally go to one.

We left bright and early (well, 10:30) and started our journey to the valley. It was a gorgeous fall day that ended up reaching temperatures in the 30s.

The orchard we decided to visit was called Mason Apples. A pretty boomin' place I'd say based on the amount of people that were there when we arrived.

You have to check in at a little booth when you first get there and tell the lady which type of apples you'd like to pick and how many. We opted for a 5lb bag of Honeycrisp apples (the absolute best in my opinion!)

Everyone is used to walking into the grocery store and buying a bag of apples. It's a completely different and exciting experience when you go to the source yourself, see all of these beautiful apple trees lined in a row and pick your own apples straight off the stem. So satisfying!

Lux was so into it! She enjoyed picking the apples off the trees but I think her favourite thing was running under the trees and playing with all of the fallen apples.

If you have an orchard nearby and have never been, I strongly urge you to take advantage of the opportunity! Our first time picking apples and seeing how much fun Lux had will be a memory I'll always cherish.

ps; the apples tasted AMAZING

What Lux Wore #3

It's been a little minute since I last posted a "What Lux Wore" hasn't it? This not having a computer thing is really throwing off my blogging game.

Anyway, we decided to window shop at the mall the other day and that window shopping somehow turned into real shopping so here we are with a new outfit for Lux!

Socks |  Winners

Headband | Ardenes

This onesie is so perfect for Lux. Girl doesn't always go down so easy..
The jeans are super flexible and she can easily move with them on. I'm not a fan of kids jeans that are so stiff it looks like the kid can't even play properly! I can't link the socks because they were from Winners and Winners is a "buy it when you see it" kind of store because once you leave the store there's a 99% chance it won't be there when you come back! The headband is super cute but of course she wouldn't leave it on after pictures were taken!

What My Dairy Free Toddler Eats In A Day #1

Hey guys! I've been wanting to start this series for a little bit now. The main reason being because ever since Lux turned one and started eating "real people food" I have scoured the internet numerous times searching for toddler meal ideas. Now, I'm definitely not knocking other mom's when I say this but majority of meal ideas I came across were hot dogs, chicken nuggets, bologna, ham or turkey slices, etc. It's totally fine if that's what you like to feed your kid but those ideas just didn't sit well with me. I wanted my toddler eating a somewhat healthier diet.
I say somewhat because honestly it can be hard finding healthy food your kid will eat but if you're trying your best to choose the healthier option then hey, you're doing great in my books!

Lux is a fantastic eater. Really. I lucked out big time. The only small obstacle we face is that she's allergic to dairy. So her diet is 100% dairy free. Nothing major though- I'm allergic to dairy too so I've got a few years of diary free eating under my belt.

So, I'll be posting a few of these "What My Dairy Free Toddler Eats In A Day" and I hope they help someone out who may be struggling to come up with ideas like I was!

[ MILK ]

We give Lux organic hemp milk as an alternative to cow's milk. I've done a ton of research regarding all of the different milk alternatives we could give her and hemp milk is by far the closest to regular milk than the others (besides soy but I don't feel comfortable giving her so much soy to drink). The benefits of hemp milk are incredible and it actually contains more Omega-3 than cow's milk. It has a higher fat content than almond milk and it is a great source of calcium. The only downfall is that it doesn't contain any vitamin D but we just add a D drop to her cup and she's good to go!
Anyway, you can choose whichever milk you're most comfortable using. We use this and it's been fabulous so far. Lux will usually have about 18-22 oz of milk a day.

[ BREAKFAST ]

apple and cinnamon oatmeal
half of a large banana
half a cup of peach daiya dairy free yogurt

This is a typical breakfast for Lux. We'll change up the oatmeal flavour, fruit and DF yogurt flavour but for the most part this is what breakfast looks like. Sometimes we'll have eggs or something else but this is something she loves to eat.

[ SNACK ]

green grapes
rice crackers with peanut butter

She'll typically eat one to two snacks during the day. This day she only had one snack because her nap ran pretty late and she slept trough the "second snack" window.

[ LUNCH ]

tuna sandwich
cut green beans
unsweetened blueberry applesauce

Sometimes I'll cut her sandwich into small squares but lately she prefers taking bites off the whole sandwich. I think she sees us eating like that and she wants to copy. I was totally shocked that she even liked tuna but I'm so happy she does.

[ DINNER ]

homemade vegetable soup
1/2 cup raspberries

Lux absolutely loves this vegetable soup. I cook it in the slowcooker so everything is nice and soft for her. In the soup we have turnip, potatoes, peas, carrots, green beans and black beans. The raspberries are frozen and super cheap at Walmart. We opt for fresh when they're in season but frozen is just as good when you can't get them.

So there it is! I hope this helps a little when you're trying to come up with some ideas. I can't wait to add more posts to this series! :)

Skyline Trail | Cape Breton Highlands National Park

The Skyline Trail is a trail I have been wanting to hike forever. I was born and raised on Cape Breton Island but for some reason I had never hiked this trail. Well, on a recent mini vaca to the island we decided we were finally going to hike it.

I'm just going to start by saying it was a terrible day for a hike. Especially this hike. It started out okay but halfway through the hike it started raining. And then it was pouring. And then it was so windy we couldn't even go down to the farthest boardwalk to really take in the views because the wind would have blown Lux away. I kid you not.
So the pictures I DO have are nowhere near what I wanted to end up with on this hike. It was too wet to haul my camera out so I had to settle for my cousin taking pictures on her phone really quick and sending them to me.

It makes for a fun story to look back on but in the moment I was not too happy. Here are the photos!

Even though the weather wasn't in our favour the views were still breathtaking. But we'll go back again some day when it's nicer out.

Life Lately | Saving & Christmas Shopping!?

I can't believe I've only managed to publish one post in all of August so far (well two if we're counting this one). Time seems to be slipping away at a speed I can't keep up with.

It's not even that I've been too busy to write. I've just been trying to deal with my own stuff lately- mental health and such, you know. But I won't get into that. I figured we'd just have a chat and catch up on life.

We're still staying at my mom's place trying to save. It's going okay. I cannot wait though until we finally have our own space again.
Lux is getting SO big and so smart. She's learning a new word everyday it seems and its so fun watching her little personality form. She'll be 15 months in two days. I'll probably do another update for her soon.

I've begun my Christmas shopping *GASP*...yes Christmas. I've always started Christmas shopping in August. It makes it so much easier and less stressful. We've set a budget of two hundred for Lux for Christmas and we've picked her up three things so far totalling forty dollars- one hundred sixty to go! Two hundred may seem like a lot for a one year old for Christmas but these days $200 doesn't really go too far considering one outfit can run you twenty bucks. It makes me really excited though. Starting the shopping I mean. I'm not ready for cold winter nights just yet but I guess I'm okay with the chilly fall days making their way around the corner.

I don't really have much else to talk about. I feel like life is on stand still until we get our savings in order and get our own place again. I will try to post more frequently but honestly, I make no promises lol

What's been going on with you?

Half Year Goals (for a happier me)

I set some New Year goals in January (which I'm failing hard at btw) and I thought why not set a few more! This time though, they're goals which (I hope) will help me become a "happier" me.

[ COMPLAIN LESS ]
We humans, are creatures of habit. Believe it or not, constant complaining- about nothing- is habit. I'm not entirely sure when I fell into this habit but when I sit back and think about it I do complain an awful lot about nothing. Things that shouldn't bother me, things that DO bother me and sometimes even things that I don't feel any particular way about. Just another excuse to complain. And guess what? It's annoying. Not only to myself but I'm sure it gets annoying to others. I feel annoyed when I'm around someone who complains constantly and here I am doing the same thing. So for my first goal and my first step to feeling more happy- I am going to try to complain less.

[ SEE THE GOOD IN THINGS FIRST ]
Too often am I quick to judge, quick to respond and quick to jump to conclusions. I'm going to try to sit back and look at the positive side to things before I form any opinions.

[ STOP WORRYING ]
I am a constant worrier and I honestly need to stop. It's not healthy to worry as much as I do. I don't think it's even sane to worry as much as I do. I carry far too much stress for someone my age. My premature white hairs (yes, white) are proof. I'm forever worrying about my health (health anxiety is not fun) and I seem to be the one who worries over money the most even when there isn't much to worry about. It's hard to not worry but I'm going to try my best to control it a little better.

[ START RUNNING ]
Even though I know I NEED to exercise, the thought of running never really appealed to me. That is until I raced Craig down the road to our car one evening and I felt incredible even running that short distance. I'm going to make an effort to run every day in the early morning.

[ INDULGE A LITTLE ]
Ever since having Lux and worrying constantly about our finances I find I never want to spend money on myself or make excuses as to why I shouldn't buy something. Well, I'm trying to convince myself that every now and then it's okay to indulge a little.

So five goals. Five goals that will hopefully help me to become a happier, better me.

TELL ME A GOAL YOU SET FOR THIS YEAR OR IF YOU SET ANY HALF YEAR GOALS YOURSELF!

"Uncommon" Baby Gift Guide!

Gift guides are great aren't they? Personally I love checking out gift guides. I always seem to come across amazing things I wouldn't have otherwise even thought about!

Ever since becoming pregnant myself-and then having Lux- baby accessories are now one of my main shopping priorities..(okay, maybe it's my only shopping priority but I can't help it! Teeny tiny baby products are so much fun to shop for!)

Maybe you're like me and love finding cute, unique things for your baby or perhaps you know someone who's having a baby soon and you want to find the perfect baby shower gift? If so, you're in luck.

With the help of Uncommongoods.com I've come up with an amazing guide showcasing some "uncommon" baby gift ideas that any mom would be over the moon to receive (myself included!)
Don't sweat it if you aren't in the market for baby items though. Uncommongoods has a plethora of products I know you'll love. Maybe your best friend is getting married and you want to buy her a thoughtful personalized wedding gift or how about a super unique anniversary gift that you'll treasure forever? If you have a hard-to-buy-for man in your life you can check out these gift ideas for men!

Here are six baby products I think will make fantastic gift ideas! (links are in the titles)

These are too cute! If you're someone who loves having things organized these would be perfect. I wish I had of seen these when I first had Lux. It's quite annoying having to sift your way through clothes every few months looking for the proper size.

Now I did have this exact same mitt (two actually) for Lux and they are wonderful! Not only do the mitts help with teething but babies love the crinkle noise they make.

I mean come on. Who wouldn't love these!

I love this! These sectional plates are awesome for when your baby starts eating solid foods and if your kid is anything like mine they love tipping their plates upside down. Hello suction plate!

Why oh why didn't I see these when Lux was smaller?
It would have made eating out and visiting SO much easier.

Growth charts aren't necessary but I think they're so adorable! I've got my eye on this one and am highly considering ordering one for Lux!

Pretty awesome huh? There are tons more on the site to choose from but first I wanted to touch on a few points about Uncommongoods.com so you know a little more about the company before browsing!

The website features products created by individual artists offering a huge selection of unique and creative products- it's an online marketplace! They're also doing their part to be as environmentally friendly as possible and have created a program called Better to Give where you get to choose a partner for them to donate $1 from every order! Definitely a company I can get behind.

Let me know what gift idea you liked the best!

*This post is sponsored by Uncommongoods.com but as always all views and opinions are my own*

Dollar Lake Provincial Park | Wyses Corner, N.S

Dollar Lake is a Provincial Park I've driven past more times than I can count and never really gave it any thought. I knew I'd visit one day but I was in no rush, if you know what I mean.

WELL...

Yesterday my brother suggested we head there for a beach day and let me tell you...Dollar Lake is now at the top of my list! Hands down the nicest place I've gone swimming in a long time. The lake is stunning. A beautiful sandy beach surrounded in trees. The lake floor is nothing but sand as far as you can walk out. Absolutely amazing.

I know my Provincial Park posts usually show the park with a ton of photos of it but I felt a little awkward hauling the camera out with so many people on the beach. We will definitely be heading back this summer and I promise I'll get better photos of it!

For now, here are the few I did manage to get.
